Council Meeting (Oral Question): Quota-free Scheme for Hong Kong Private Cars Travelling to Guangdong via the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge (2023.12.13)

MR CHAN KIN-POR (in Cantonese): Thank you, President. Macao vehicles travel to Guangdong via HZMB free of charge, whereas the HZMB toll for northbound Hong Kong vehicles is RMB300 for a round trip, which virtually increases the cost for Hong Kong vehicle owners. Will the authorities consider having discussions with the Mainland in the future to reduce or even abolish the HZMB toll so as to encourage more Hong Kong vehicle owners to apply for the Scheme, thereby increasing the utilization rate of HZMB?

SECRETARY FOR TRANSPORT AND LOGISTICS (in Cantonese): The Member is right in pointing out that the current HZMB toll is RMB150 per trip. I have also heard some people asking whether there is any room to reduce or even abolish the toll. In fact, we have been following up with the Mainland on this issue. As we all know, HZMB is a vital link connecting Hong Kong with Zhuhai and Macao. Therefore, we strive to explore this possibility. We are pursuing this matter with the Mainland. Thank you, President.
